Public Prosecutor v Wells [1913] VUNHJC 37; Criminal 201 (1 August 1913)

Case No 201

This first day of August one thousand nine hundred and thirteen in the matter of a charge against Matthew Wells of having engaged a native woman Mary at Hog Harbour Santo on or about May 7th 1912 without the consent of her husband contrary to the provisions of Article XXXIII of the Convention.

WHEREAS it appears from the evidence that the marriage of the said Mary was contracted under circumstances which cast extreme doubt on its validity. The Court considers that the accused should benefit by this doubt and thereupon acquits him.
