An Act to amend the Shipping Registry Act 1985

(25 March 1997

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Cook Islands in Session assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1. Short Title - This Act may be cited as the Shipping Registry Amendment Act 1997 and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Shipping Registry Act 1985 (hereinafter referred to as "the principal Act").

2. Classification of ships before registration - Section 12 of the principal Act is amended by:

(a) deleting from paragraph (b) the words "contained in Schedule 1" and substituting the words "approved by the Minister, from time to time, and notified by notice published in the Gazette";

(b) adding at the end of paragraph (c) the words "and with any regulations made under this Act in respect of any particular proposed activities of a ship."

3. Consequential amendments - (1) Schedule 1 of the principal Act is repealed. (2) Schedule 2 of the principal Act is amended by deleting the words "to those conventions" and substituting the words "to those conventions subject to compliance with Cook Islands law."

4. Regulations - Section 68 of the principal Act is amended by adding to subsection (2) the following new paragraph after paragraph (w):

"(ww) the imposition of operational requirements for any ship registered under this Act as the Minister deems appropriate."
