An Act to amend the Marriage Act 1973

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Cook Islands in Session assembled, and by authority of the same, as follows:

1. Short Title - This Act may be cited as the Marriage Amendment Act 2000, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Marriage Act 1973 ("the principal Act").

2. Justice of the Peace or other persons may solemnise marriages - Section 10A of the principal Act is amended by -

(a) inserting in subsection (1) after the word "Peace" and before the word "to" the words "or other persons";

(b) deleting from the third line of subsection (2) the word "not" where it first appears.

3. Second Schedule - The Second Schedule to the principal Act is amended by inserting after paragraph 4 the following new paragraph -

"5. A man may not marry another man and a woman may not marry another woman."
